Brief Job Overview/Summary

The Stockton University Counselor will guide entrepreneurs and small business owners in starting, managing, and expanding their businesses. Specific areas of focus include business planning and strategic development, entity formation, marketing and sales strategy, financial management and access to capital, legal and compliance matters, certification and procurement readiness, human resources and talent management, cybersecurity and digital transformation, operations and process improvement, exporting and international trade, and industry-specific challenges such as manufacturing, retail, and food service.


Stockton University covers and supports businesses in the 7 County South (Southern NJ). These counties are Burlington, Camden, Gloucester, Salem, Cumberland, Cape May and Atlantic Counties, with a focus on the last three counties.

Descriptions of Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

This position is responsible for and not limited to the following:


• Utilizing critical thinking and analytical expertise to create customized strategies tailored to each small business client’s specific needs through individualized one-on-one counseling
• Developing and delivering group training sessions and webinars to disseminate knowledge and resources, depending on area(s) of specialty
• Collaborating closely with other NJSBDC counselors to provide comprehensive client support
• Staying informed on emerging trends, regulatory changes, and industry best practices relevant to the assigned specialty area
• Delivering on assigned metrics for federal and state requirements
• Engaging in activities that facilitate cross-functional coordination, stakeholder communication, and the ongoing alignment of programmatic efforts with strategic objectives
• Maintaining and creating new productive working relationships with key statewide small business stakeholders
• Tracking and reporting outreach and consulting activities, ensuring compliance with organizational guidelines
• Building and maintaining strong client relationships, fostering collaboration and trust throughout the consulting process


Physical Demands and Work environment
• MS Office Suite, Adobe Acrobat and CRM software systems
• Occasional travel throughout the state, and nights/weekends on occasion. This position is primarily remote, with travel expected only when necessary to meet with small business clients at regional offices throughout the state, or to attend events and training throughout the state
• Operates in a professional office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment
• Largely a sedentary role; however, some filing is required, which would require the ability to move files, open filing cabinets, bend or stand as necessary, and lift up to 25 lbs

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent combination of education and business acumen.
• Three to five years of relevant experience in consulting, advising and business needs.
