Brief Job Overview/Summary

The Student Success and Internship Coordinator works within the School of Arts and Humanities Dean’s Office. They will report directly to the Dean. The successful candidate will work closely with the ARHU Dean’s office staff and faculty to support at-risk students. In addition, they will coordinate all aspects of internships for ARHU. Regular hours for this position are 9:00am to 5:00pm with occasional evenings and weekends.

Descriptions of Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

Student Support - Advisement & Retention

  • Ability to effectively interact with diverse student populations and maintain confidentiality while working cooperatively with others to meet their needs
  • Identify and manage a caseload of at-risk students and tracks their retention and graduation rates (e.g. gathers and analyzes retention data for at-risk ARHU students)
  • Manage at-risk students with academic and personal barriers by developing individual success plans and directing appropriately to university resources and services
  • Identify high DFW courses for ARHU students and builds appropriate intervention resources (e.g. workshops, tutorials, study sessions, etc.)
  • Monitors students’ attendance, performance, and participation in academic related functions (e.g., withdrawals, registrations, retention, time to degree completion, etc.)
  • Review and interpret degree evaluation (DegreeWorks) and student transcripts
  • Assist with student questions and concerns regarding registration, drop/add, and DegreeWorks issues relating to degree requirements
  • Advise students on alternative course selections when classes are cancelled
  • Collaborate in Orientation programing, advise students one-on-one with course registration and degree requirements
  • Manage confidential student information with tact, discretion and in compliance with FERPA regulations
  • Assist with Summer Orientation program and pre-register students for courses
  • Coordinate and attend School-wide events (e.g. graduate school exploration, cultural experiences, welcome back programs, and awards ceremonies, etc.)
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and functional working relationships with Career Services, Registrar’s Office, Center for Academic Advising, Admissions, and other University-wide offices to assist students


Internships and Career Counseling

  • Teach courses related to internships and/or professional development as needed
  • Create, manage, and expand all aspects of the ARHU internship program
  • Establish an excellent rapport with faculty, staff, and other offices
  • Collaborate with the Senior Curriculum Advisor and Academic Program Coordinator on various projects and initiatives
  • Meet with students one-on-one to discuss career goals and to prepare them for internships
  • Provide career guidance and coaching on major selection, resume review, job search strategies, cover letter writing, and administers career interest inventories
  • Connect students to career resources both inside and outside the university
  • Support new student recruitment by providing information to prospective students and their families
  • Assist with recruitment events, e.g., Open Houses
  • Participate in state, regional, and national conferences and meetings to maintain knowledge of current industry best practices
  • May assign and supervise the work of a Professional Services Specialist III, IV, clerical, part-time and/or student aids
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Minimum of 3 years experience working with college students in student retention or a related field
  • Tech savvy and proficient use of Excel, Google documents/spreadsheets, Microsoft Office Suite, and Qualtrics

NOTE:

Applicants who do not possess the required education may substitute required experience on a year-for-year basis (30 credit hours is considered one year of college.)  A Ph.D. or an Ed.D. degree may be substituted for two years of the required experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Earned Master’s Degree in Counseling, Social Work, Higher Education or related field
  • 3-5 years’ experience
  • Classroom teaching experience
  • Ability to produce data-rich reports and strong proficiency in using various system tools
  • Experience working with at-risk students and knowledge of current trends in retention research and strategies.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong interpersonal skills, ability to work independently and on teams in a highly collaborative environment
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities while maintaining attention to details
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
