Brief Job Overview/Summary

The position of Director of Nursing Simulation and Learning Laboratories (SLL) will be responsible for managing daily simulation lab operations across campuses, designing, and evaluating simulation cases based on educational principles, ensuring growth and alignment of the simulation program, updating programs/cases based on latest evidence, and conducting evaluation of the simulation program based on school and professional standard outcomes.

Descriptions of Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

Leadership and Supervision:

  • Coordinate and supervise the general operation of the Nursing Simulation and Learning Laboratories (SLLs) to provide a wide variety of simulation-based learning experiences for nursing
  • Coordinate scheduling and workflow between programs, faculty, clinical partners, and staff
  • Oversee the regular maintenance, repair, and training for all simulation equipment, including but not limited to human patient simulators (HPS), computers, monitors, and a variety of healthcare equipment; audiovisual and debriefing systems; virtual reality laboratory computers and other equipment; surgical simulators; computer-based training programs
  • Provide technical support for task trainers and multimedia peripherals, including but not limited to beds/examination tables, head walls, patient monitors, and other healthcare equipment; medication dispensing systems; vital sign monitors
  • Communicate effectively with manufacturers and vendors regarding maintenance, repair, update and technology changes and coordinate upgrades to software and equipment as needed
  • Organize, maintain, and create orders for simulation hardware, software, equipment and supplies
  • Monitor and prepare the SLL component of the nursing budget
  • Provide recommendations and facilitate purchase of equipment and supplies, anticipating future changes in technology
  • Maintain the SLLs to meet current regulatory, safety, and accreditation standards
  • Lead effective collaborations in curriculum development and implementation in simulation-based learning experiences with faculty and interdisciplinary clinical agency partners
  • Oversee the set up and take down of simulation lab equipment, allowing for rapid turnover of simulation lab set up as necessary
  • Provide theatrical production (costuming and moulage) for simulation scenarios as requested or required
  • Establish and update policies and standard practices based on evidence and simulation standards related to the use of simulation technology, competency assessment, and evaluation of students
  • Determine and manage the laboratory and simulation inventory system in nursing locations (Manahawkin and Galloway)
  • Ensure the completion of an inventory process (end of each semester) of the Nursing Simulation Learning Laboratories (SLLs) in Manahawkin and Galloway
  • Ensure the safe storage of hazardous materials, including simulated medications and sharps
  • Oversee the collection and disposal of waste materials according to OSHA and other regulations

Program and Curriculum Development:

  • Incorporate best practices and evidence-based research in simulation program development and implementation across the healthcare continuum, including simulation scenarios, pre-assignments, pre-briefing, simulations, and debriefing
  • Create and implement educational programs for new and seasoned faculty, including pre-briefing, simulation, and debriefing
  • Participate in program faculty and unit meetings to assist with curricular development and implementation of simulation-based learning experiences
  • Develop new simulation experiences based on nursing student-, faculty-, or administrative-identified needs and serve as a resource for faculty utilizing simulation in classroom or lab activities
  • Facilitate and direct all student learning in the skills lab and simulation experiences, thus assisting students in the assessment, development, and evaluation of psychomotor, cognitive, and affective skills
  • Assess student competencies and skills throughout the programs
  • Demonstrate nursing procedures for student observation
  • Independently, or in conjunction with other faculty/university personnel, assist students in achieving course and clinical objectives through skills and laboratory activities, patient simulation using low, medium, or high-fidelity simulation, and objective structured clinical exam (OSCE) with a variety of patient actors
  • Schedule student appointments for practice, return and group demonstrations when applicable
  • Observes and provides student progress feedback to nursing faculty course instructors
  • Tutor students who require remedial assistance or additional assistance with clinical learning especially those students who have withdrawn or failed a clinical course
  • Utilize instructional methods that promote student development of critical thinking, problem solving, decision-making, clinical competency, and life-long learning
  • Develop data collection and record keeping processes to evaluate student learning that comply with course, program, and university learning outcomes
  • Communicate and work effectively with the School of Health Sciences Simulation Lab Coordinator
  • Create a positive work environment demonstrating simulation leadership to include orientation, training, and scheduling simulation and skills lab training for all users of the SLLs, including faculty and staff
  • Create, coordinate, and participate in interdisciplinary and interprofessional educational activities involving the School of Health Sciences and the university
  • Participate in continuing education to maintain individual professional certification or seek certification
  • Incorporate International Nursing Association of Clinical and Simulation Learning (INASCL) Standards of Best Practices and ensure compliance each semester

Outcomes Evaluation, Research, and External Funding:

  • Submits annual reports to the Associate Dean of Nursing regarding progress on achievements and outcomes, program additions, and strategic goals and program effectiveness foci
  • Network with other simulation experts at local/state/national level to develop and utilize best practices
  • Coordinate and implement data collection for ongoing program outcomes for evaluation, accreditation, research, or grant requirements
  • Cultivate internal and external funding sources, as appropriate
  • Maintain simulation and learner confidentiality as per FERPA
  • Perform other job-related duties as required or as assigned by the nursing program, Associate Dean of Nursing and Chief Nurse Administrator, Dean of the School of Health Sciences, and Provost and Vice President

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or higher in nursing from an accredited school
  • Current RN license in New Jersey
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in healthcare simulation and/or skills lab teaching as an educator or simulation technician
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience working in a clinical nursing position
  • Flexibility to work evening or weekend shifts, as needed

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience as a nurse or clinical educator is highly preferred
  • Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE) or Certified Healthcare Simulation Operations Specialist (CHSOS) preferred or the plan to become certified
  • Experience with technology and simulation software, hardware, and equipment
  • Ability to quickly learn new technology and software programs
  • Knowledge of adult learning principles

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Proficient in PC, MAC, and MS Office with the ability to learn new software and simulation equipment
  • Managerial, program development, and team building experience
  • Knowledge of operating processes such as budgeting and accounting, quality improvement, and regulatory guidelines (patient safety guidelines)
  • Excellent organization, communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills
  • Familiarity with BlackBoard or other LMS platform
  • Strong planning, organizational, multitasking, and project management skills
  • Able to handle sensitive issues and maintain confidentiality and work with diverse populations
  • Adaptable to changing priorities and deadlines
