Brief Job Overview/Summary

The Director of the Coastal Research Center (CRC) provides leadership for Stockton University's applied coastal research, securing funding and overseeing external projects, strategic partnerships, and CRC operations. Reporting to the Dean of the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (NAMS), the Director supports the University's academic mission through student engagement, collaboration with faculty, and contributions to teaching and research. The Director also serves as the CRC's primary representative to government agencies, clients, and other external partners, including the regional community and news organizations. This position is fully supported by sponsored research grants and contracts.

Descriptions of Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Solicit and negotiate contracts reflecting the scope of work and financial arrangements with prospective clients and governmental agencies.
  • Lead scientific research and scientific field studies by securing grant funding and collaborations and serving as the principal investigator and project manager.
  • Recruit, train and supervise employees, providing guidance and leadership to enable them to complete operations and research within the CRC.
  • Represent the University at meetings and engage with clients and federal, state, and municipal officials, providing information and expertise to support informed, science-based decision-making surrounding issues affecting New Jersey coastal communities.
  • Provide materials to NAMS academic programs in Marine Science, Environmental Science, Geology, Sustainability and Coastal Zone Management.
  • In coordination with the University Grants Office, oversees projects throughout the development, operational, and final reporting phases.
  • Review and validate the data collection methodology and the means used to process it into tangible materials for CRC clients.
  • Develop and review reports published on behalf of the CRC.
  • Review project financial documentation to ensure accuracy and minimize processing errors.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of New Jersey coastal systems, coastal resilience, environmental policy, and resource management
  • Written and verbal communication skills, including experience preparing scientific reports, technical documents, and presentations
  • Experience developing and maintaining partnerships with government agencies, academic institutions, and external stakeholders

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in marine science, coastal science, geology, environmental science, oceanography, engineering, hydrography, or a closely related field
  • Five years of progressively responsible experience in applied research, coastal science, environmental consulting, or research administration
  • Experience supervising professional staff and managing multidisciplinary research teams

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree in marine science, coastal science, geology, environmental science, oceanography, engineering, or a closely related field
  • Experience directing a research center, institute, consulting organization, or similar applied research enterprise
  • Experience securing, managing, and administering externally funded research projects and contracts, including oversight of project budgets and financial resources
