Brief Job Overview/Summary

The EHS specialist responsibilities include the development, expansion and maintenance of all university environmental, occupational safety and health programs. The EHS specialist is also responsible for developing knowledge of and assuring compliance for applicable federal, state, and local regulations and codes.

The EHS specialist undertakes research processes to identify hazards that protect employees and the environment, against know occupational or environmental hazards, the abating or eliminating sources of pollutants or hazardous chemicals that may affect the environment or the health of the campus population. Using the knowledge of various scientific disciplines, the EHS specialist may collect or evaluate samples of air, soil, and water to analyze, document and recommend actions based on data derived from measurements.

Descriptions of Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

• Carry out various awareness campaigns and program creations for promoting the culture of safety and environmental protection
• Carry out routine inspections to check whether all the safety and environmental protection measures are working properly
• Monitor applicable regulations for changing requirements for compliance and recommending/creating policies and/or procedures to meet new regulatory requirements. Program materials created may require formal reporting/presentation to affected personnel
• Conduct Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) sampling and inspections utilizing instrumentation to evaluate for mold, CO levels and other defined indicators
• Review accident reports and make recommendations to eliminate contributing conditions, either behavioral or environmental
• Monitor and coordinate the collection and forwarding of data to consultant for Title V reporting purposes, including the Stratospheric Ozone Protection regulations
• Assist with the collection of required information and submission of the annual stormwater pollution prevention program
• Monitor and coordinate the collection of drinking water samples throughout the campus by contract analytical lab and assure the results are promptly reviewed for compliance
• Develop/create/conduct/record routine safety and environmental training and medical monitoring for affected personnel
• Must complete RCRA hazardous waste and DOT training within the first year of employment and maintain training certifications
• Conduct semi-annual asbestos inventories for all ACM on campus. Must complete AHERA Building Inspector training within the first year of employment and maintain training certification
• Coordinate/Implement HazCom and Right-To-Know requirements, including receiving and filing of all SDSs
• Coordinate semi-annual hazardous waste pick-up with approved vendor and file records accordingly
• Act as liaison to State agencies and provide reporting and other written correspondence as necessary
• Provide general assistance with budget as requested
• Must be able to review technical information/analyze as necessary/develop report of findings and recommend/implement corrective actions based on regulatory requirements
• All other duties as assigned by their supervisory staff

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, environmental health, environmental science or environmental studies
• Five (5) years in this discipline
Applicants must meet one of the following or a combination of both experience and education. Thirty (30) semester-hour credits are equal to one (1) year of relevant experience.
• Six (6) years of professional experience in different aspects of administration and business practices; including design and implementation of policy and procedures, vendor service contracts and improving and updating management practices.
OR
• Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; and two (2) years of the above-mentioned professional experience.
OR
• Possession of a master's degree; and one (1) year of the above-mentioned professional experience.
NOTE: "Professional experience" refers to work that is creative, analytical, evaluative, and interpretive; requires a range and depth of specialized knowledge of the profession's principles, concepts, theories, and practices; and is performed with the authority to act according to one's own judgment and make accurate and informed decisions.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Must possess technical knowledge in varied disciplines related to the environment, occupational health and safety
• Ample knowledge about chemicals and regulatory reporting.
• Excellent computer skills as well as excellent verbal and written communication skills, expert time management skills
• The ability to work effectively even under pressure, and the ability to detect and solve problems effectively
