Brief Job Overview/Summary

Under direction of a Foreman, M/W or other supervisor in a State Department, institution, or agency, assists the craftsmen and/or independently performs basic maintenance, construction, repair, or mechanical adjustment work involved in varied types of buildings, building facilities and/or building utilities, and highway and bridge construction; does other related duties as required.

Descriptions of Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

• Works independently or as a member of a group in the painting of wood, metal, brick, and cement walls, floors, and ceilings of the interior and exterior of buildings; the staining, varnishing and refinishing of cabinets, desks, chairs and other furnishings and equipment; and the painting and repainting of pipes, radiators, tin roofs, and other types of iron work.
• Works independently or as a member of a group in the repair and maintenance of walls, ceilings, interior and exterior brickwork, tile floors, drains, cement and concrete floors, sidewalks, steps, foundations, and other types of masonry, plastering, and stonework to include mixing, placing, and finishing concrete and aligning forms.
• Works independently or as a member of a group in the repair and maintenance of water, drainage, waste and gas lines; toilet bowls, wash basins, and urinals; and radiators, refrigerators, laundry machines, and other types of plumbing and steamfitting fixtures, fittings, appliances, and machinery.
• Works independently or as a member of a group in the repair and maintenance of buildings, office furniture, screens, storm sashes, frames, windows, ceilings, partitions, and other types of carpentry work.
• Works independently or as a member of a group in the installation, inspection, repair, and maintenance of cables, wiring, motors, generators, pumps, refrigerators, radios, sound equipment, telephone line switchboards, oil burners, and other types of electrical equipment, telephone line switchboards, oil burners, and other types of electrical equipment, appliances, fixtures, machinery, and circuits.
• Works independently or as a member of a group in the repair and maintenance of copper leaders and gutters and slate roofs including the operations of flashing, papering, cutting, and punching prior to installation of slate; pots, steamers, cans, pails, and other kitchen and dairy equipment and ventilators, air ducts, and weatherproofing equipment.
• Works independently or as a member of a group in the cleaning and repair of boilers, the repairing of locks, and the repair and maintenance of automobiles, trucks, snowplows, and sand spreaders.
• Uses pneumatic tools, air compressors, jackhammers, pavement breakers, concrete mixers and excavation equipment.
• Assists in snow removal and ice control work.
• Obtains, stores, safeguards, and properly uses equipment, materials, supplies, and tools.
• Keeps records of work done, materials used, and time spent.
• Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

 

Required Qualifications:

• One (1) year of experience in work involving the inspection, repair, and general maintenance of household, office, and other equipment, fixtures, fittings, appliances, machinery, furnishings, and buildings.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Appointees may be required to possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and applicable endorsements for the class and type of vehicle being operated.
• Experience in repair, alteration, programming and installation of mechanical and electronic locks, security devices, door checks and keys of varied types, preferred.
