This is an in-person on campus, non-remote position. The University has implemented a pilot program allowing employees to work either a compressed 4-day work week with extended workdays or may work from home one day a week. Participation is subject to Divisional Executive approval depending on operational need.

Brief Job Overview/Summary

Under the direction of a supervisory official at a State University, develops and implements fire and safety programs, conducts inspections of ground and buildings occupied by students and college staff and corrects fire and safety hazards.

Descriptions of Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

The Fire Safety and Prevention Officer is responsible for the following:

  • Develops and implements fire and safety programs for a college campus
  • Conducts inspections of grounds and buildings occupied or utilized by students and staff to identify fire and safety hazards, including but limited to electrical devices, outlets, obstruction of emergency exits, lighting and other potentially hazardous conditions
  • Takes measures to, or provides recommendations for correction of fire and safety hazards
  • Maintains inventory of fire safety and related equipment
  • Interprets and applies fire regulations
  • Identifies and implements changes in the safety and accident prevention program
  • Inspects fire extinguishers for accessibility and that they are up-to- code with date
  • Conducts and supervises the fire drills; observes and evaluates evacuation results
  • Cooperates with local fire departments to investigate the cause of fires
  • May provide training in safety procedures
  • Provides advice and guidance on fire and safety regulations
  • Responds to fire alarms, oversees building evacuation
  • Establishes and maintains essential records and files
  • May perform other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • 1 year experience in the implementation of fire prevention and safety programs, including the inspection, identification and correction of fire and safety hazards
